What is a SMART Goal?
Goals are part of every aspect of business/life and provide a sense of direction, motivation, a clear focus of what you want to achieve, and clarifies the importance of the goal.
A SMART goal is used to help guide goal setting.
This means you are just not setting unreasonable goals.
SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
SMART goals are:
- Specific: Well defined, clear, and unambiguous
- Measurable: With specific criteria that measure your progress toward the accomplishment of the goal
- Achievable: Attainable and not impossible to achieve
- Realistic: Within reach, realistic, and relevant to your life purpose
- Timely: With a clearly defined timeline, including a starting date and a target date. The purpose is to create urgency.
I recommend using this as a reference when setting your goals for 2021!

Tips For Setting goals for 2021
2021 goal planning was fun for me this year.
This was partly because I wanted 2020 to just be over.
People that set goals are more likely going to achieve and meet their expectations.
Before setting any goals this year, it is important to stick to things that you actually want to work on.
For me, that was perfecting skills, living a better life, managing money better and growing my business.
This will ensure that you set goals that you actually want to exceed.
So what are some good goals for 2021?
Goals definitely vary from person to person.
For example, I talk a lot about finances on this blog and that’s because one of my goals is to become financially free.
And in order to work through those finances, I need to ensure I organize my finances accordingly so I know what I am dealing with.
I have also taken it upon myself to have a no-spend month every couple of months (using this no-spend challenge planner) and I have definitely created a spending plan that keeps my spending in check.
I would suggest grabbing your very own FREE spending tracker today to do the same.
Whatever you choose to set as a goal, just make sure you have a realistic plan to meet those goals.
Some goals can be big, some are small, some are working progress (so long-term goals) and others are short-term such as booking a private island that costs $6000.
So your goal, in this case, would be to save $6000.
This is absolutely achievable if you use my money-saving challenge guide.
These are just examples of 2021 goals.
You might not even have financial goals, maybe you are considering work goals for 2021.
Maybe it’s personal goals.
As long as you set some this year, you will feel more accomplished by the time the end of the year comes along.
Here are some goal ideas for 2021:
- Pay off your debt
- Increase your income
- Start a side hustle in 2021
- Start investing
- Travel more
- Spend more time with family
- Be more organized
- Learn a second language
- Buy a home
- Focus on your health
- Learn a new skill
These are just a few of the 2021 goal setting ideas I suggest.
You can have more or less.
You might even have other suggestions.
21 Goals To Set For 2021
1. Support Black Businesses
As a woman of colour, 2020 was a really tough year especially for small businesses but specifically small black businesses.
I am all about support and buying local, but the majority of my goals for the year 2021 is to support black female entrepreneurs in any way I can.
I have made the conscious decision to check out and buy from black female entrepreneurs.
- When I shop for clothes online
- When I buy my makeup
- Even small local grocery stores owned by black people
- eBooks and courses will all be bought from black entrepreneurs
Basically every time I shop now, I will find a black owned-business to support.
2. Skill Goals for 2021
I have been learning so many amazing skills in 2021 so far.
And my goal for this year is to keep expanding on those skills.
As a blogger, I am always learning new skills which have also helped me develop my creative side.
For example, I took the time 2 years ago to learn SEO skills to improve my blog.
And now I am seriously getting the hang of it.
I also perfected and learned how to create amazing Pinterest Pins.
For this reason, I am now getting over 150, 000 page views a month from Pinterest.
You can use SkillShare to learn and perfect new skills.

3. Create A Daily Routine
One good goal to have this year is a daily routine that will keep you organized.
Following a good daily routine can help you establish priorities, limit procrastination which we all tend to have, keep track of goals, and in some cases, it can make you even much healthier.
Having a daily routine will help you create habits that will make you successful.
And since one of my goals is to become successful, I have adapted 11 habits of successful women to live by every day.
4. Come up with a Work-Life Balance
For years, I put my work in front of anything.
That is because I was trying to build a successful career that I was willing to sacrifice relationships to get where I wanted to get.
Obviously, this is not the way to live.
I almost lost my relationship back then and I am glad I made the switch.
I am now married to that wonderful man and we are raising a gorgeous little girl.
Don’t allow work to be the priority in your life, and strive to spend more time with family.
Here a few steps you can take:
- Don’t take work home
- Stop checking your phone after 6 pm
- Spend quality time with family for dinner every day
- Make plans to meet with friends at least once a month
5. Personal Goals for 2021
Setting goals for 2021 is a lot harder now than it was in past years.
I am not sure why, but I think one of the reasons is due to what 2020 was.
I definitely recommend you have a list of goals to set for yourself that is personal.
For example, I decided that 2020 was the year I wanted to finally get married to my partner of over 13 years.
Then COVID hit, but we did still get married and it was wonderful despite the situation.
6. Connect With Others
You don’t need to do things alone.
One of the things I realized last year is that you need good connections to succeed.
Other people will help you grow much faster than you realize.
So one of your goals for 2021 is to make new connections.
You could make new friends, connect with other colleagues at your workplace, or find friends online.
For example, I made the decision to build relationships and work with other bloggers.
These new connections have led to big projects for me.
7. Work goals for 2021

9. Build A Family Emergency Binder
One of the many things to achieve this year is to create an emergency action plan.
My 2021 goal is to create a Family Emergency Binder or a Grab and Go binder to help my family track and plan for emergencies, should they occur.
If ever you had to make a run for it, would you have all of the important documents you needed to rebuild your life?
If you do not, it’s time to create an emergency family binder.
An Emergency Binder or a go and grab is a binder or a folder that has important information about everyone in the family.
This includes important things everyone should know about in case an emergency suddenly strikes.
Life is completely unpredictable and this only means that you should be as prepared as possible in case anything should happen.
Ideally, you want to have all your important family documentation all in one spot making it easy for you to grab and quickly leave if they are emergencies.
Get started with your emergency binder right now.
10. Money Goals for 2021
Having smart financial goals is the best thing you can do for yourself this year.
But what do we mean by money goals?
Financial goals or money goals are objectives or milestones that you want your money to cover at any specific time.
I decided to really set achievable financial goals for 2021!
If your finances are not in order, this is the time to get financially organized.
Stop ignoring any debt you might have and make a plan to get rid of it.
Negotiate any bills and with any spare change, put it in savings.
In my opinion, that’s a great goal worth setting!
Here are examples of financial goals you can set:
- Paying off your debt
- Saving for retirement
- Building an emergency fund
- Buying a home
- Saving for a vacation
- Feeling financially secure
Here are 6 quick and simple budgeting tips for women that hate budgeting.
Read it so you can start your journey to financial freedom quicker.
11. Build an Emergency Fund
I already started.
Since I am starting from scratch, I went ahead and put over $300 in my new tax savings account.
The goal is to have about $10, 000 in there by the time this year comes to an end. I want to have about $10, 000 in there for emergencies.
And since I just finished paying off my car, the money I was putting into monthly payments will now go into funding my emergency fund.
I am using one of these money-saving challenges to help me build my emergency fund.
12. Maintain a Healthy Working Budget
My husband and I have finally merged our expenses (we have a joint account for family, bills etc) but we still have our individual accounts.
But we finally worked out a budget that has allowed us to meet our expenses, pay our debt and put any extra cash into a savings account.
One of my goal ideas for 2021 was to create and maintain a working budget.
We found and settled on something back in 2020 and it’s working great.
If you want to give it a try, here are 6 quick and easy budgeting tips for women that hate budgeting.
13. Read more books about entrepreneurship
This blog is all about finances, making more money and becoming an entrepreneur in your own rights.
A few great goals to have if you plan to become an entrepreneur is to read more.
Lucky for you, we created a great list of some of the best books every entrepreneur should read to help them become more successful.
Some of my favourites from the pack are:
- You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth
- The 4-Hour Work Week: Escape the 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich
These are the ones I have personally read.
But one of my many goals for this year is to re-read all 11 books I recommend for entrepreneurs.
14. Stop Procrastinating
Do you want to know something?
I am actually not a procrastinator.
But last year I fell into a horrible habit of leaving things to the last minute and powering through just before a deadline.
Usually, this is how I get my best work done, but man oh man.
This is not the way to go.
After looking through some goal ideas for 2021, I knew this one had to make my list.
No more procrastinating for me.
15. Break Bad Habits
Speaking of procrastinating, I have also picked up a few bad habits working from home day in and day out.
So on the list of goals to achieve this year, I decided that I needed to have a better lifestyle and this meant breaking up with all the bad habits I developed in 2020.
- Eating take out daily
- Not drinking a lot of water
- Ignoring my migraines
- Not working out
All of this ends in 2021.
Time to build new and healthy daily habits.
16. Using Powerful Affirmations
I am a big believer in affirmations and one of my goals for 2021 is to use affirmations to get me through the day.
In 2021, I am going to prioritize using affirmations to manifest the life I want to live.
Putting it out in the universe or whatever you believe in is huge.
This is also known as the law of attraction and it can do wonders for your life, career and your wishes.
With consistency, making affirmations a part of your morning routine can help build self-esteem and self-awareness!
If you are not sure where to start, you need Gabrielle Bernstein in your life.

17. Health Goals for 2021
Since having my daughter in 2017 I have suffered several health issues including chronic high blood pressure, PCOS, severe migraines and more.
I have decided this year I will look into organic and natural healing of my inner-self.
I am hoping for a second child but I need to cleanse myself first and heal from within using natural methods.
I will be eating to heal myself.
Once I start taking care of myself from within, things will work out, I trust that.
18. Reward me more in 2021
I work hard every single day to create a perfect life for myself and my family.
And some days, I feel stressed and unmotivated.
We recommend that on your list of goals to set for yourself that you have something on self-care.
I think treating yourself once in a while is great for self-esteem and it can actually make you work harder.
After reaching a milestone no matter how big or small, make it a habit to reward yourself.
Here are few things you can do to reward yourself:
- Eat a chocolate bar
- Go out for dinner
- Stay in a hotel and get pampered
- Go to the spa
- Get your nails done
- Take a day off
- Laugh or cry or give yourself to be you
- Ask for help

19. Accept change
The world is changing and it’s changing pretty fast.
And with that in mind, one of your goal ideas for 2021 is to adapt to change.
2020 was a year of less socializing, working from home and adapting to keeping relationships virtually.
For this year, you want to pivot with change and adapt as much as possible.
Our goals for 2021 are looking a bit different and I am okay with that.
No matter what 2021 will be, I suggest you accept and make the effort to change as a person with the world around us.
20. Challenge yourself this year
We are almost done with our 2021 goal ideas for 2021.
We couldn’t finish up this post without a good challenge.
A few good goals to have for yourself is one that challenges you to be the best that you can be.
When it comes to personal growth it’s essential to challenge ourselves.
If you are not feeling challenged then your goals are not big enough.
Think big, achieve big things!
If you want to become a millionaire, you can become one!
Just challenge yourself to get there.
Four years ago, my goal was to make $1000 a month consistently on the side.
I used this exact money and goal planner to create a full plan of how I was going to achieve that and it opened up a lot of opportunities that have allowed me to now make more than $5000 a month with my small blog from home.
Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself more.
21. Surround yourself with positive people
If you want to be successful, I suggest you surround yourself with successful people.
By doing this, you will develop habits of financially successful people which will allow you to also become successful.
It’s definitely true that surrounding yourself with positivity and success will attract the same energy.
To transform your self-talk and your mood from negative to positive, it’s important to surround yourself with positive energy.
If you are constantly surrounding yourself with people who are negative and bring your energy down, you will start to attract more negativity yourself.
Surround yourself with people who uplift and want to see you succeed.
The most successful people are those who have a happy, healthy and positive approach to life.
