Now, let’s not beat around the bush: making the step from part-time blogger to e-commerce superstar is not easy. It’s a big step and one that requires excellent planning. However, it’s also more than achievable, as you already have the content and audience to sell products of interest, and end up with a steady stream of income – and a business that could grow exponentially. Let’s take a look at some of the things you have to take into consideration – read on to find out more on how to make money!

Product is key

After spending a long time building up a good rapport with your audience, you don’t want to ruin everything by selling irrelevant or unnecessary products. You should already have an idea of the type of things your audience might be interested in, based on your most successful posts and topics. For example, if you run a travel blog, perhaps you could set up your store to sell adventure accessories or even travel mementos? If you have a fashion blog, maybe you could find a t-shirt supplier and try your hand at printing self-made designs and selling from your site? You could even repurpose your content, and start up an ebook store to sell your knowledge for a small price.

Site build

To sell anything online, you will need a way of presenting your products. There are a few routes to choose from – you might start with using a basic Magento or Woocommerce template for WordPress, for example. Or, you could take the custom-built path, paying a designer to create something unique.

Safety and security

When you collect your customer’s email addresses, it’s important enough to take their privacy and security seriously. But when you are also gathering bank card numbers, login details, and highly personal information it’s critical. The likelihood is that you are going to need some help to ensure everything is locked down and your customer data is safe, and so it’s vital you choose an IT partner that has the relevant certification when it comes to online security and cyber protection. The slightest little data breach could sink your business very quickly, so if you aren’t technically minded, consider outsourcing the critical backend work needed to protect your site.

The art of persuasion

Finally, don’t assume that people will buy your products just because they read your blog. You’ll need to give them excellent reasons to do so, or you won’t sell a thing. Your products should shine on their pages and will need high-quality images to show them at their best. And you’ll need to create compelling, persuasive copy that captures the imagination to hit your sales targets.

Switching from blogging to ecommerce is a natural progression in many cases – but it can be a tough process. Get the basics right, however, and you have every chance of success – good luck!
